British Military Vehicle markingsI know that IŽam missing very much but this is my first
attempt for this topic. [please click to englage the markings pic] Front of vehicle:Very often you find a union Jack sticker just above the headlight, sometimes on the right somtimes left. I think the union jack is on the drivers side. For example on a LHD vehicle on the left side. Sometimes there is a Royal Airforce roundell on the same place. Near to the spare wheel you can find the TP marking (e.g. TP30) for the tyre pressure in psi. The Bumper shows often numbers oder unit names. e.g AHQ for Ambulance HQ or A24 for Ambulance 24. Sides of the vehicle:On the doors are geometrical figures that shows sub-unit markings:
Often the callsign of the vehicle is painted inside this figure. For example 0A mean a battalion commander or 10A is a platoon commander. (is this right ? if not please email me) Very common on the vehicle are the "Chalk No." for shipping of the vehicle. Usually the text is painted white on a black square behind the doors or on the doors, but is has been seen on green also. Sometimes on the front wings.
Sometimes there is the Number of the Trailer also painted on the door. The Tyre pressure is painted on the front & rear wings in top of the tyre. e.g. TP30 or TP25. Common on older Landrovers are the round "brigde class sign" witch shows the tonnage of the vehicle. This plates are made from steel and is abt. 22.5cm diameter painted yellow. I seem them only on older Series II and Series II up to abt. 1978/80. For me it seems that on newer vehicles this are no longer in use. (right?) Back of the vehicle:Here you can you find the vehicle voltage near to the trailer socket. e.g 12V or 24V. Most times you will find a union Jack on the left or right body back panels (on the other side of the reg.-plate). Engine Bay:Here you find marking representing the fluids that have to fill in. e.g. OX8 for Brake fluid, OMD80 for Engine Oil (and oil-bath air cleaner on series Landroves), OEP 220 for axle and transmision oil. Al39 for the radiator. Pictures are here. Please email me if you have some input for this side. |
